Novo Nordisk partners with Anthropic to accelerate drug

Novo Nordisk announced a collaboration with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic on Wednesday. The partnership aims to speed the discovery and development of new medications.

The Danish drugmaker did not disclose any financial details for the deal. Novo Nordisk stated the two companies will work together to identify challenges in drug development and create solutions.

"Joining forces with Anthropic will boost our R&D organization," Novo CEO Mike Doustdar said in a statement. The collaboration is part of Novo's broader effort to become what it calls the world's most AI-driven healthcare company.

Initial focus on R&D workflows

An initial project will test Anthropic's Claude Science model on specific research and development workflows. The companies selected areas where they expect the AI to have the greatest impact.

Novo Nordisk also expects to use Anthropic's frontier AI models to strengthen its software development capabilities. This is intended to help scale up the use of AI technology across the entire company.

The drugmaker envisions using these AI models to advance scientific reasoning within its R&D processes. Another stated benefit is the enhancement of agentic software engineering.

A competitive AI landscape

Pharmaceutical companies are racing to use AI's potential in identifying promising experimental medicines. Many have engaged in partnerships described with competitive superlatives.

Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, and Roche have all announced collaborations with chipmaker Nvidia. Those deals are claimed to provide the most powerful or largest supercomputing capabilities for drug discovery.

Other firms are pursuing deals focused on specific AI tools. In May, Bristol Myers Squibb announced its own agreement with Anthropic, planning to let Claude access all of its institutional knowledge.

These AI-centered deals with companies like Google Cloud, Iambic Therapeutics, and Insilico Medicine are potentially worth $1 billion or more.

Building on existing AI efforts

Novo Nordisk's announcement follows its April partnership with OpenAI. That earlier deal aimed to integrate AI tools into every step of the company's operations.

The latest collaboration with Anthropic is designed with specific safeguards. Novo Nordisk emphasized strong data governance and human oversight in its statement.

The company stated this structure helps ensure AI is applied responsibly. It is also meant to align with Novo's own ethical and compliance standards.

Acknowledging the challenges

While AI holds great promise for drug discovery, significant challenges in adoption remain. Large language models can be susceptible to errors, according to experts.

Some specialists warn that expectations for AI are greatly exceeding the benefits observed so far. There are also growing concerns about establishing necessary guardrails for a powerful and potentially dangerous technology.

Novo Nordisk's statement on Wednesday directly acknowledged some of these concerns. The company highlighted its planned governance framework as a response to the risks associated with AI implementation in pharmaceutical research.
