The US Food and Drug Administration launched a nationwide effort on September 30 to recruit scientists, medical experts, and consumer representatives to its advisory committees. The agency will accept nominations on a continuing basis, including self-nominations, through a centralized application portal.

This initiative aims to broaden and strengthen participation on the committees that review scientific evidence and provide independent recommendations. The FDA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Members are invited to serve for terms of up to four years. They provide independent recommendations to help the FDA make well-informed decisions on behalf of the American public.

Expertise and representation sought across key medical fields

The FDA is recruiting for vacancies in multiple scientific domains. The agency is seeking candidates for current and expected vacancies in oncology, cardiovascular medicine, neurology, genetics, and medical devices.

For consumer representative positions, nominees should have demonstrated affiliation with or active participation in consumer or community-based organizations. They should be able to analyze technical data, discuss benefits and risks, and evaluate product safety and efficacy from a public perspective.

Nominee qualifications and responsibilities outlined

Nominees for scientific and technical voting member positions must demonstrate subject-matter expertise relevant to FDA advisory committees. They must be able to interpret complex scientific and technical information. A capacity to provide objective, independent advice is essential.

Candidates must understand the public health significance of issues before the committee. The committees review scientific evidence and make independent recommendations to the agency. These recommendations are not binding on the FDA.

Deadlines set for first consideration of nominations

The effort includes two Federal Register notices. One notice is for scientific, technical, and professional voting members. The other is for consumer representatives.

For first consideration for current and near-term vacancies, specific deadlines apply. Nominations received after these dates will be considered for later vacancies as they arise.

FDA leadership emphasizes national call for participation

Acting FDA Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Kyle Diamantas, J.D., made a statement about the initiative. He emphasized inviting people from across the country who are leaders in their fields, including clinicians, researchers, and community voices.

Diamantas noted that advisory committees provide independent expertise and rigorous scrutiny for complex and rapidly evolving science areas. The Trump Administration is described as deeply committed to strengthening the partnership between the FDA and the nation’s brightest minds. Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas said the agency is actively inviting people from across the country who are on the forefront of their fields.

Nominations received after the November deadlines will be considered for future vacancies as they occur.
